Aquatic Life

This series is new but there will be many more as I expand the idea to include many animals and plant life in ever more complex scenes.  These pieces are all mixed media with a focus on the blown glass fish, however many materials are used to create plant life and a world all its own.  I am focusing on creating sea life from imagination and inspiration and less on literal translations, letting my mind create unhindered by reality yet still holding close enough to bring others into these miniature worlds.

This work speaks more to me than just artwork, it is an awareness of the delicate balance that we hold with the natural world.  A coexistence with nature that we are falling short of in are duties as caretakers of this planet.  The beauty of the oceans and forests are disappearing, pollution and human population are bringing the natural resources of this planet to its knees.  I hope this work inspires not only awareness of the absolute beauty held by are oceans but an understanding of an ecosystem that coexists in balance with one another.  All humanity can find this balance and our part in great planet.

The steel armature is shaped and welded with a blacksmithed patina finish.  The coral is flameworked Borosilicate glass and attached to the armature using industrial adhesive.  The coral represents over 15 different species of real coral.  The fish are hot sculpted blown glass with a 5 layer lacquer based subtle gold finish.  The rocks are solid glass of Sapphire crystal blue in color and sand carved with a sandblasted surface and a luster finish to give a natural glow to the surface.

Detail:
This detail is to show the intricacies of each piece of coral, the coloring and assembly is all done while the glass is hot.  Each individual piece is constructed separately then is assembled into groups and finally each cluster is assembled in the coral heads.

This is an imaginative Beta fish or at least a distant cousin, this fish is clear glass sandblasted with a satin luster finish on it.  The Cattails are polished brass with wrapped copper making the Cattail topper.  The base is Red Oak with a deep Burgundy stain and gloss clear coat.

Dimensions: 12"x15"x6.75"

Fishcolor1

"Untitled 3"

This fish is done in full bright colors of orange and red with bright yellow fins.  The fish is sandblasted with a fade of color to clear glass as you go from head to tail.  The fish and the fire have a satin luster finish over the sandblasting to give it a subdued painted look.  The fire pieces accent the colors in the fish and also tie the fish into the scene on the base.  The base is Red Oak finished with a deep Burgundy stain and a protective clear coat.

Fishclear2
